What is Holistic Healing and Well-being?
In this article, we will be exploring holistic medicine and various natural alternatives to healing. We will look at cranio-sacral therapy, flower essences, essential oils, homeopathic remedies amongst others. Eastern medicine, where many of these techniques were inspired from, is different than Western medicine. Generally, Western medicine seeks to rid a person of symptoms, most often by masking them. Generally, there is little regard towards a cure. Eastern medicine and inspired forms of healing seek to address not the symptoms but their causes. That is why healing may seem to take longer with alternative approaches, as it is addressing the cause of the imbalance, which more often than not takes time to re-dress itself.
To begin understanding the benefits of alternative modalities of healing, we must first discuss the body/mind/spirit connection.
What is the body/mind/spirit connection?
A simple way to look at the body/mind/spirit connection would be to use a water molecule in its different states of being as an example. A water molecule is solid when frozen, liquid at room temperature, and gaseous above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. It is the same water molecule, just expressed differently. So it can be said that the body/mind/spirit works in a similar fashion. If we looked at ourselves in terms of energy, the body is solid, the mind is less dense, less tangible (like the liquid water molecule) and the spirit is even more subtle energetically (like the water molecule in its gaseous state). Begin to see yourself in terms of energy, and having different states of expression. All of the different states of expression, be it body, mind or spirit, are always connected and never separate. If something negative happens to one state, you can be sure that all other states are also affected.
The body, mind and spirit are always connected and simply different expressions of the same being – you. What happens to one energetic level, affects all the other levels. The levels are not separate, they are connected through energy.
Since we humans are physical, mental, social, emotional, AND spiritual beings, some people refer to a “physical – emotional – social – psychological – spiritual” connection. But we will refer to it as the body/mind/spirit connection for ease of discussion. Just know that the different energetic levels of expression of your being are many. Only 3-5 energetic levels are discussed and readily accepted in Western medicine (mind, body, spirit) though certain Eastern medicine systems discuss 70 000 levels of energetic expression for each of us! In this holistic blog, we explore body, mind/intellect, heart and emotions, work and relationships, and spirit/soul, in an effort to live holistically and actualize our greatest potential. The beauty of working with the mind body connection is not only in its ability to help you improve your health, but to achieve more of what you want in your life.
What is holistic medicine anyway?
(I borrowed this next section from http://www.holistic-mindbody-healing.com. Please feel free to visit this site for additional information) .
“Holistic medicine, also known as holistic healing or holism, is not a method but an approach to wellness. The basic philosophy is to treat the entire person, not just the pain or disease. The goal is to enhance wellness on all levels: mental, physical, emotional and spiritual.
The official definition of holistic medicine, according to the American Board of Holistic Medicine (ABHM) and the American Holistic Medicine Association (AHMA) is
“the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person-body, mind and spirit. The practice of holistic medicine integrates conventional and complementary therapies to promote optimal health and to prevent and treat disease.”
You may be surprised to see that this holistic definition includes conventional allopathic medicine as well as alternative therapies. It encompasses all modalities of diagnosis and treatment. This includes everything from pharmaceuticals to acupuncture to energy healing to chiropractic and herbal remedies.”
